Privacy Policy

Effective date: April 7, 2026  ·  Last updated: April 7, 2026

Passing Lane is built for California teenagers preparing for the DMV written permit test. We take the privacy of minors seriously and have designed this app to collect only what is necessary to deliver the service.

1. Who We Are

Passing Lane is operated by Passing Lane Solutions LLC, a California single-member LLC ("we," "us," or "our"). You can reach us at hello@passinglane.app.

2. Who This Policy Covers

This policy applies to all users of the Passing Lane iOS application and the website at passinglane.app. Our primary audience is California teenagers aged 15–17 preparing for the DMV written permit test, as well as their parents or guardians.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, do not create an account or use the app. If we learn that we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly. Parents or guardians who believe their child under 13 has created an account should contact us at hello@passinglane.app.

3. Information We Collect

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and password (stored in hashed form via Supabase Auth). We also store the username you choose, which becomes your in-app identifier.

Profile data. We store the language preference (English or Spanish), XP points, streak count, badge progress, and study progress you generate by using the app. This data is associated with your account and stored in our database.

Study activity. We record which questions you have seen, whether you answered correctly, and your bookmark selections. This data powers the app's personalization and progress tracking features.

Usage information. We use PostHog for product analytics and Sentry for crash reporting. These tools may collect device type, OS version, session duration, screen names visited, and error logs. We configure these tools to minimize personal data collection.

Reports you submit. If you use the in-app "Report a Problem" feature, we collect the report type and description you provide, along with your user ID and a timestamp.

What we do not collect. We do not collect your real name, phone number, location, photos, contacts, or any government-issued identification. We do not run advertising or use advertising SDKs. We do not sell your data.

4. How We Use Your Information

  • To create and authenticate your account
  • To track your study progress, XP, streaks, and badge achievements
  • To serve questions in the correct language and at the appropriate difficulty
  • To enable the friends leaderboard feature using your invite code
  • To diagnose crashes and fix bugs using anonymized error reports
  • To understand how users navigate the app so we can improve it
  • To respond to support requests and problem reports

We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to delivering the Passing Lane service.

5. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers necessary to operate the app:

  • Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage (servers in the United States)
  • PostHog — product analytics (data stored in the United States)
  • Sentry — crash and error reporting
  • RevenueCat — in-app purchase management (no financial data is stored by us)

Each provider processes data only as needed to perform their function and is contractually prohibited from using it for other purposes. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.

6. Friends and Leaderboard

The friends leaderboard displays your username and XP total to friends you have connected with via invite code. No other profile information is visible to other users. You control who you connect with — connections are only established when both parties use an invite code. You can view your leaderboard standing without connecting with anyone.

7. In-App Purchases

Passing Lane offers a one-time in-app purchase to unlock the full question bank. Payment is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store your payment card details. RevenueCat manages purchase status on our behalf. Purchase records are associated with your Apple ID, not your Passing Lane account data.

8. Data Retention

We retain your account and study data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days. Anonymized, aggregated usage statistics may be retained indefinitely for product improvement purposes.

9. Your Rights and Choices

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time by contacting us at hello@passinglane.app. California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to delete it, and the right to opt out of sale (we do not sell data). To exercise these rights, contact us using the email above.

10. Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, including encrypted connections (TLS), hashed passwords, and row-level security policies on our database. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. We will notify affected users promptly in the event of a data breach as required by applicable law.

11. Third-Party Links

The app and website may contain links to third-party services, including DMV resources, driver's education providers, and insurance comparison sites. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those services. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any personal information.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will provide notice within the app. Continued use of Passing Lane after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
